This web page is my diary for searching for gradschools. It contains the index of links immediately below this paragraph, a log of what I've done so far, and pertinent info I've found on the respective school's webpages. I'm liking the idea of being in California, but I'm also interested in MIT. Right now, there's chance I would work and attend gradschool simultaneously, but it's a slim chance. I've been told that students seeking to apply to large competitive schools like Stanford and MIT usually don't get full rides, and I'm all about spend as little excess money as possible, so I've got to start looking at some other schools real quick and hopefully have all the applications in by November. I've pretty much decided that I am going full PhD, but what I specialize in is still a little fuzzy. I'm thinking about microwave and millimeter antenna circuits because they are entirely analog and cannot be infiltrated by the digital regime, and also because they involve a lot of resonance, which is a particularly interesting topic to me (following Nicolai Tesla).

    1) MIT:
    • Amtrak Northeast Direct train to boston (BOS, BBY, RTE) from philly (PHL): ~$140.00 (round trip).
    • MIT subway map by MBTA.
    • MIT subway pass package by MBTA. ~$125 for 4months (semester package).
    • Degree requirements
    • In general the Master's degree requires a minimum of one academic year of study, the Engineer's degree two years, and the Doctor's degree three or more years beyond a baccalaureate in the same field. For all degree programs there is a residence requirement. Residency requirements reflect academic (not summer) terms. For the S.M. the minimum is one academic term, for the Engineer's it is two academic terms, and for the Doctorate it is four academic terms. The M. Arch. and S.M. Arch.S. require four academic terms. The M.C.P. is a minimum of two academic terms. All degree requirements include completion of an acceptable thesis prepared in residence, unless special permission is granted for part of the thesis work to be done elsewhere.
    • Official score reports should be sent to the MIT Admissions Office, ETS code #3514. Engineering generally requires only the General GRE (no Subject test).
    • Apply by January 1st for September admission.
    • Approximately 5,700 grad students enrolled, 4,300 undergrad: 1,400 engineering masters, 1,100 engineering PhD.
    • Tuition and finances.

    2) Stanford:
    • Stanford: Grad Engineering Programs
    • The Master of Science degree requires 45 units of course work and has no thesis requirement. The residency requirement is three full-tuition quarters; this means that for most programs, the degree can be completed in one year.
    • The Engineer's degree requires 45 units of course work and research combined, three full-tuition quarters beyond the master's degree, as well as a thesis and usually takes two to three years to complete.
    • The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of 72 units of course work and research combined and may include units completed for another advanced degree at Stanford. The residency requirement is nine full-tuition quarters, but may include up to three quarters of residency for graduate work done elsewhere. All doctoral students must pass a University oral examination and submit a dissertation which has been approved by three readers. The dissertation is expected to be an original contribution to scholarship or scientific knowledge and to exemplify the highest standards in the discipline. Because of the vagaries of research, time to degree can vary, but most students complete this degree in five to six years.
    • Prospective grad applicants.
    • Electrical Engineering: Ph.D., Engineer, M.S., postal code = (94305-9505). December 15 deadline for all full-time applications. To be considered for financial aid, applications must be fully complete by December 15. GRE must be taken no later than November 2000. Winter and spring applications are not accepted (except for Honors Coop students). Honors Coop applicants must apply by July 1 for autumn quarter, October 1 for winter quarter, January 1 for spring quarter, April 1 for summer quarter.
    • A Stanford award covers all necessary tuition plus a living stipend.
    • Must have GRE taken by November for admission in the following fall (?).
    • Recommendation Form (pdf).
    • Reinstatement Form (pdf).
    • Approximately 7,500 grad students of 14,000 total enrolled.
