What is it??
Smit or Smitty are system administration tools. SMIT or System Management Interface Tool is a program that builds shell scripts to perform system administration tasks. If you execute the command smit, the program started will be character base in ASCI environment or GUI in X environment. Smitty on the other hand will run as character in X environment.
Smit has what are called Fast-Paths, and will refer to these throughout the documentation. The fast path, is used as a parameter to smit and allows smit to start on the menu screen that the fast path represents. To veiw a fast path when in a smit menu press or click F8.
Smit menus and options are all stored in the object oriented database (ODM), and can be changed and added you if an administrator so wishes. The use of a database allows smit to dynamically build commands lines and functions using the users data input from the menu screens. This also provides the ability for an novices administrator to perform advance tasks without know the commands or options to perform the task.
Menu and field sensitive help are provided by pressing the F1 key. To view the command before or after it is run, the user my press F6. Alternatively, all commands run will be logged in /smit.script and all menu movement will be logged in /smit.log. These files will be created in the users home directory if they are not the root user.
