Doug, Nice job! It looks professional but not cluttered. how do I download and print the article "Your First Cigar" on Dave's homepage. In case you didn't know, I tried to access your page by going to http://www.ede.vill.edu/tildadoug and it said it did not exist. So I just went to http:/www.ece.vill.edu and it directed me to the Engineering Departments Student Home Pages list and picked your name from the list of students. It brought me to your home page and loaded very quickly. The address I got was http://www.ece.vill.edu/user/doug Send me a response at : pcrepair@msn.com Bill

I went through the entire Unix guide built by you. I really enjoyed the session. It was very informative and it is just the right material required by a programmer. A suggestion is that u add the questions asked by the readers which u feel appropriate in your home page. These questions should not be the more common ones. Thankyou very much

I wanted to know if you live in Germany I live in the U.S. and a few years ago, we had a foreign exchange student come to our school from Germany and his name was Helge Probst. Is Probst a very common name? Do you know of him? Please E-mail me at eheavrin@raven.tach.surf.net Thanks
Doug says,
I sent mail but it bounced! Anyway I live in the US near Philadelphia. Not many Probst's around here but I think there are a few in the Lancaster area.

saw, your comments in the comp admin news group, will further react on it, there. For the time being, I am just trying to have some fun on the Internet, however, find the level of discussions still too much on Citizen Band level. For that reason, I was pleased with your contribution, and I will try to contribute as well on a regular basis, although I am not yet that advanced like having my own homepage. But we'll see. From Holland, a rainy sunday morning, wish you luck. Jos.

This is a good page! I am just starting out in Unix, and found some good shell script stuff here. I have a question. I would like to take your shell script "rename files with names that are similar" one step further. I would like you to consider the following functionality: 1. I would like to take the script, and change it into a daemon. I guess I could wrap the whole thing in a "while" clause, and wake up every five or ten minutes. Why, you ask? Heh, heh. 2. At intervals, a file will land in a sub- rectory, say INPUT.DAT. I would like to rename the file to INPnnnnn.DAT, where nnnnn=a sequence number, but there are other INPnnnnn.DAT files in the sub-directory. I would like to get the highest occurrence, add 1 to it, and rename INPUT.DAT to this INPnnnnn.DAT sequence. Is this possible? I know it's a little convoluted, but it would make a good example. If you don't wish to make this an example, could you at least point me to some of the shell commands necessary to do this? I appreciate your time in reading this, and hope to visit more as this page grows. It's got a lot of nice potential. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Joe

Good stuff in the /bin/sh section Doug. I've been doing sh hacking for almost 11 years now. Even wrote a program that plays chess in it!! :) I agree with your assertion that /bin/sh is the only Unix shell to program in for portablity reasons. Here's a recent post of mine to the Unix shell newsgroup... Subject: Re: What shell for beginner writing scripts Newsgroups: comp.unix.shell References: 01bbd62b$86e1bfa0$05f7face@tech4.monmouth.com 56te5e$j0r@tiptoe.f hda.edu slrn5964g6.6i.psci@teleport.com : I know this is a touchy subject, however, I need input from experienced : users that can still remember being a newbe. I strongly recommend /bin/sh. Plain old vanilla Bourne Shell. There are good reasons to use it for programming. 1) It is the only *totally* portable shell for all Unix's(sp?). I have never seen a Unix version that does not support it. (Inluding HPUX, WYSE Unix, Solaris, SunOs, A/UX(Apple) SCO, AIX(IBM), Sequent, Altos, Ultrix, MICROPORT, Ctix(Convergent) SVR[234], BSD & others...) 2) All Unix startup scripts are written in it (AFAIK). Why? It's portable I suppose... 3) The oldest versions of Unix use/support it so you can be fairly sure your programs will be backward compatable. Please dont use csh. --Joe McCaughan ============ end snip ============ Cya Doug! --Joe McCaughan shiloh@best.com
